National Traffic Awareness Month: Staying Safe This August

The end of summer is bittersweet; kids are excited about back-to-school shopping while parents may feel a mix of relief and stress with the impending school routine. As August rolls in, it also marks National Traffic Awareness Month—a timely reminder for us all to stay vigilant on the roads during this bustling season. Here's what we all need to remember to keep our roads safer as the school bell rings once again.

Increased Presence of Kids

  • Expect more children crossing streets or biking to school, especially in residential areas and around schools. Keeping an eye out for the youngest pedestrians adds another layer of security to our communities.

School Buses on the Move

  • School buses make frequent stops, and it’s crucial to be extra vigilant. Remember the stop sign laws—when a bus stops, so should you. This ensures our children are safe as they board or leave the bus.

Chaos in School Zones

  • Drop-off and pick-up times at schools can be chaotic. Stay patient and alert in these often congested school zones or parking lots. This not only prevents accidents but also sets a good example for our children.

New Student Drivers

  • High school student drivers provide regular reminders to be patient. They're new behind the wheel, so granting them extra space and understanding is key during this learning phase.

Safety Conversations at Home

  • Talk with your children about walking and biking safely. Discuss the importance of using crosswalks, wearing helmets, and staying off phones and devices when near roads.

By making a few mindful changes in our daily routines, we can significantly impact our community's safety. Safety is a shared responsibility, and as we navigate this busy season, let’s lead by example and keep our roads a haven for all. Let the lessons of National Traffic Awareness Month extend beyond August, nurturing a culture of prudence and care on the roads throughout the year.
